Saturday Morning Cartoons: Big League City

There’s a group of Kings fans on a tour called the “Playing To Win” tour, where they’re going around NBA cities to basically spread the message of keeping the Kings in Sacramento. They stopped in Oklahoma City last week and spoke with Mayor Mick, who is just outstanding in summarizing the value of having an NBA franchise in your city.

I especially liked this line from Mayor Mick, who is so stinking eloquent: “In our case, we were a minor league city. A minor league city for 116 years and our peer cities were the ones we played in sports — Wichita, Little Rock, Amarillo, Tulsa. Nice cities, every one of them. But, with the addition of the Thunder, our peer cities, at least on a superficial, SportsCenter level, are Chicago and L.A. and New York and Miami and Boston. Cities that we would never be in conversations with without our sports entity.”

Another one: “Young people want to be in a city that’s culturally relevant. And if you don’t have a major league professional sports team, you are less relevant in that superficial, pop culture method, than cities that are.”

Mayor Mick is the best. The best.
