Shai Gilgeous-Alexander agrees to 5-year max contract extension with Thunder
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander isn’t going anywhere.
Gilgeous-Alexander agreed to a max contract extension with OKC shortly before midnight eastern time, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
The new deal will begin in the 2022-23 NBA season and run for five years. The contract will pay Gilgeous-Alexander $172 million for the next five seasons.
This contract doesn’t include a player option, per Woj.
Gilgeous-Alexander had a breakout year in 2020-21 for the Thunder. He averaged 23.7 points per game while posting an elite true shooting percentage of 62.3 percent. He also nearly doubled his career-high assist average to 5.9 per game.
Oklahoma City is one of the only teams remaining in the NBA with cap space, so it’s expected they’ll be active through the remainder of free agency — either by adding players or making trades.
