Westbrook Breaks Single-Season Triple-Double Record

Westbrook Breaks Single-Season Triple-Double Record

Move over, Oscar Robertson. There is a new single-season triple-double king.

Five days after tying Big O’s record of 41 triple-doubles in a season, Russell Westbrook etched his name in the history books with number 42 today in Denver. His eighth triple-double in ten games earns him sole possession of a record that has stood since the 1961-62 season — a mark many believed would never fall.

The record was clinched at the 4:18 mark of the fourth quarter, with the deciding assist coming when Semaj Christon nailed a corner three off a kick-out from Westbrook. Despite the game being played on the road, the crowd in Denver anxiously awaited the big moment and showered the Thunder superstar with a raucous ovation in the wake of the history-making play.

The historical significance doesn’t end in passing Roberston. With the 79th triple-double of his career, Westbrook moves solely into fourth place all-time, breaking a tie with Wilt Chamberlain. Next up on the all-time list is Jason Kidd in third at 108. As Westbrook has recorded 60 of his 79 over the last two seasons alone, it’s reasonable to believe he’ll be knocking on Kidd’s doorstep sooner than what should be humanly possible.

With history now officially made and in the rear view, the Thunder now look toward the end of the regular season. There are two games remaining (Tuesday at Minnesota, Wednesday vs. Denver), but with the first round of the playoffs already locked-in, it would make a lot of sense for Westbrook to rest from here on out. Of course, this is Russell Westbrook we are talking about — you may have to hide his jersey to keep him off the floor.

Update: This is how the Nuggets game just ended. Have a day, Russell Westbrook.

Unbelievable. Recap to come.
